Proprio – WHAT?
It simply means awareness of one’s own body position. It is generally mediated my muscle spindle fibers and golgi tendon organs. These essentially help the motor coordination of the body. The most common symptom of poor proprioception is poor balance.
Your proprioception abilities can be impaired when you injure a joint – such as spraining your ankle from soccer or basketball. When the soft tissues of the joint are damaged – so too are your proprioceptors.
Try this out: if you recently sprained your ankle, try balancing on one foot, count how many seconds you can hold it, then switch foot. Chances are you will be able to balance much longer on your healthy foot, than your injured foot. This is because of the injury to the proprioceptors in your injured ankle.
